ANTaR WA congratulates Karajarri people Top
ANTaR WA congratulates the Karajarri people on their recent successful land rights settlement. The September issue of 'Talking Native Title' featured the front cover article:
"Kimberley groups welcome Karajarri determination"

The report covered the determination made on 8 September 2004 by Justice North of the Federal Court recognising the Karajarri people's rights and interests over 5,647 square kilometres. Made with the consent of pastoralists, fishers and government, this finalised the Karajarri people's native title claim, following an earlier consent determination in 2002 which recognised native title rights over 24,711 square kilometres.

Further details on the successful Native Title claim can be obtained on the National Native Title Tribunal website at:
www.nntt.gov.au/media/1094607397_1700

Deputy Premier Eric Ripper speaking at Bidyandanga at the settlement, said that everyone recognised that reaching agreement was better than fighting native title through the courts. The Karajarri determination was the sixth native title application to be settled since the election of the Gallop government.

Mr Ripper said the Commonwealth was ignoring the chronic under-funding of native title bodies, slowing progress of the State's 130 outstanding native title applications.
