This is Fred Edwards. He was born in 1939 in North-west Queensland. For the first 25 years of his working life his wages were held in 'trust' for him by the government. He was never paid those wages in full but has now been offered just $4,000 for his 25 years of labour.

With the Senate now controlled by the Howard Government, your support is needed more than ever to achieve justice for Indigenous Australians.

Imagine 25 years of your wages ... stolen

That’s what happened to generations of hard working Aboriginal families in Australia.

From 1900 right up to the 1980s, governments controlled the wages and savings belonging to Aboriginal people. This money also included child endowment, pensions and even soldiers’ pay.

Aboriginal people were condemned to lives of poverty while their money was used as public revenue or disappeared through fraud or negligence. It’s estimated that more than $1 billion in today’s value was lost or stolen from Aboriginal families in this way.

Now these families need our help.

ANTaR has been campaigning hard to end this national scandal and make governments meet their responsibilities to Aboriginal people.

We’re pushing for a national inquiry and for state governments to pay Aboriginal workers what they are owed.

U rgent financial support is needed so that ANTaR can gather more information for a national inquiry and action by all state governments.

Please help us ensure that Aboriginal Australians finally receive a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.

Stolen Wages is just one of the campaigns that ANTaR is conducting to bring justice for Aboriginal people. Your donation will also help us support successful Indigenous community health projects and challenge discrimination against Indigenous Australians wherever it occurs.
