Jean Brown
Chair of MT Theo Yuendumu Substance Misuse Aboriginal Corporation that
successfully prevented petrol sniffing at Yuendumu in Central Australia
by providing young people with care, counselling and access to a different
way of life. Jean often lives at Mt Theo Outstation taking care of local
petrol sniffers.
Karissa Preuss
Karissa coordinates the Mt Theo Program’s Jaru Pirrjirdi Project.
Jaru Pirrjirdi enables young people to work together to create positive
futures beyond petrol sniffing and other drug abuse. Jaru Pirrjirdi includes
a series of bush trips involving youth forums, cultural training and leadership
development.
Leo Abbott
Leo works on the Abbott Family Rehabilitation program. Based at Ilamurte
outstation, this service takes young people and adults from across Central
Australia, helping to break their patterns of substance abuse by introducing
them to cattle work and a program of support and counselling.
This event is sponsored by CAYLUS, Central Australian Youth Link-Up Service,
based at Tangentyere Council in Alice Springs, which supports community-based
programs helping young petrol sniffers, and ANTaR’s Healing Hands
Indigenous Health Rights Campaign.
